Let us begin the sixty third sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
The vulture king sampAti was waiting for his turn to help rAma’s mission since a hundred years or more! The seer niSAkara revealed that a great favor to the worlds shall be done by sampAti by staying put on that mountain awaiting the arrival of the vAnaras as part of the mission of rAma. It turned out to be exactly that way. The vulture king saved a certain-to-drop dispirited vAnaras and just when they were about give up, he came to their lives, was overcome by the story of rAma and the martyrdom of his brother jaTAyu and gave the most important information that was about the save their mission and their lives. What now for sampAti? Onwards…
sampAti continued… “The supremely articulate seer thus prophesied, pepped me up and bidding good bye to me, entered his own dwelling. I then crawled my way through the caves and the caverns and slowly came up to the top of vindhyas and ever since have been awaiting your arrival. A hundred years have passed by since this happened. I have been awaiting the opportune moment remembering the words of the seer.
अद्य त्वेतस्य कालस्य साग्रं वर्षशतं गतम्।
देशकालप्रतीक्षोऽस्मि हृदि कृत्वा मुनेर्वचः।।4.63.3।।
In due course, as the sage niSAkara attained the heavens, I was scorched by grief and a range of thoughts criss crossed my mind. Whenever the thoughts of ending my life arose, keeping the minds of the sage, I desisted from doing so. I preserved my life remembering the sage counsel which was like fire dispelling darkness.
उत्थितां मरणे बुद्धिं मुनिवाक्यैर्निवर्तये।
बुद्धिर्या तेन मे दत्ता प्राणानां रक्षणाय तु।।4.63.5।।
सा मेऽपनयते दुःखं दीप्तेवाग्निशिखा तमः।
Despite knowing the valor of the wicked rAvaNa, I chastised my son for not protecting vaidEhI. I was pretty upset with my son for allowing the abduction of sItA from rAma and lakshmaNa and owing to my friendship with king daSaratha”.
As sampAti spoke thus with the vAnaras, in the full view of his forest dwelling audience, his wings appeared in their place! As those wings, reddish in color appeared, the vulture was ecstatic and exclaimed –
स दृष्ट्वा स्वां तनुं पक्षैरुद्गतैररुणच्छदैः।।4.63.9।।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे वानरांश्चेदमब्रवीत्।
“By virtue of the influence of the revered sage niSAkara, my wings that were burnt by the scorching sun have now reappeared. I feel as mighty and valorous as I felt at the time of youth. By all means, endeavor to locate the whereabout of sItA. The fact that I regained my wings bodes well for you and ensures success”.
सर्वथा क्रियतां यत्न स्सीतामधिगमिष्यथ।।4.63.12।।
पक्षलाभो ममायं वस्सिद्धिप्रत्ययकारकः।
With those words, the best of the birds, sampAti took off from the top of the hill, keen to explore the skies. The vAnaras were very delighted and inspired to pursue their mission upon listening to sampAti. The vAnaras, as mighty as the wind, regained their enthusiasm and courage and resumed in the direction of finding the daughter of janaka.
Here we conclude the sixty third sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
