Let us begin the thirty sixth sarga of the araNya kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
Castigated and instigated by SUrpaNakha, rAvaNa spent sometime thinking about her suggestion which was to abduct sItA since rAma cannot be faced and won over in direct confrontation. He didn’t consult anyone. Rather he eighed the pros and cons all by himself and setout. Since he had to resort to treachery to abduct sItA, he didn’t go directly to their hermitage in the panchavaTI but flew in a donkey-yoked golden chariot to the hermitage of mAricha. The great mahaRshi vAlmIki offers a wonderful view of the earth from above and its beautiful spots on the sea shore as also the floating abodes of great sages in their exalted high homes attained by penance. He sees scores of sages engaged in deliberations and discussions as he flies and finally lands in the hermitage of the demon mAricha. The demon mAricha, having moved away from his old ways of violence was now spending time in a lonely hermitage in contemplation. He was surprised to see rAvaNa come back and so soon! He welcomed him with due protocol and inquired his and lanka’s welfare and the reason of his return. Onwards…
Responding to mAricha’s enquiry about his return and welfare, rAvaNa began –
“O dear mAricha, listen, I am in distress and you are my supreme refuge at this time. You must be aware that I had appointed my brother khara and sister to stay in the janasthAna along with the mighty dUshaNa and the irrepressible flesh eater triSirA along with an unfailing fourteen thousand demons with the goal of perpetrating violence against and obstructing the righteous sages of danDakarAnya from performing their sacrifices. Those fourteen thousand demons are mighty, never fail in achieving what they want and are loyal to khara. Fully armed with varieties of great weapons, they all happened to meet rAma in a battle. Enraged by their advance, that pedestrian rAma without even using a word or caution took to his bow and arrow and vanquished the entire horde of fourteen thousand ferocious demons along with khara, dUshaNa and triSirA and thus has secured the danDaka forest making it a safe place for the sages.
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसामुग्रतेजसाम्।
निहतानि शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मानुषेण पदातिना।।3.36.8।।
Banished by his angry father in to the forest along with his wife, rAma, whose days are numbered, purely counted on his strength to kill the fourteen thousand demons, khara, dUshaNa and triSirA and disfigured my sister SUrpaNakha by cutting off her ears and nose without any proclaimed enmity. He is a blot on the kshatriya clan.
He is one of bad conduct, is harsh, sharp, stupid, greedy, unrighteous, has unrestrained senses, has given up dharma and always perpetrates harm on all beings.
तस्यभार्यां जनस्थानात्सीतां सुरसुतोपमाम्।3.36.13।।
आनयिष्यामि विक्रम्य सहायस्तत्र मे भव।
I will abduct his wife who is verily like a goddess from the janasthAna with my valour and I would like you to help me in this. I am capable of inflicting comprehensive defeat on the gods when you and my brothers are on my side and hence you are completely capable of helping me in this pursuit and so be my accomplice.
वीर्ये युद्धे च दर्पे च न ह्यस्ति सदृशस्तव।
उपायज्ञो महान्शूरस्सर्वमायाविशारदः।।3.36.16।।
एतदर्थमहं प्राप्तस्त्वत्समीपं निशाचर।
शृणु तत्कर्म साहाय्ये यत्कार्यं वचनान्मम।।3.36.17।।
In valour, battle and conceit you are bubbling with ideas and are peerless full of deceitful tricks up your sleeve. Therefore I have approached you for help in this matter and listen to me about what is to be done.
सौवर्णस्त्वं मृगो भूत्वा चित्रो रजतबिन्दुभिः।
आश्रमे तस्य रामस्य सीतायाः प्रमुखे चर।।3.36.18।।
Turn into a golden deer with bright silver spots and wander in their hermitage in front of sItA. Beholding that bewitching form of a deer, sItA will insist on owning it and will compel rAma and lakshmaNa to fetch it. As they both run to fetch you, taking advantage of her being lonely in the hermitage, I will abduct her like the planet rAhu eclipsing and stealing the light of the moon. Having lost his wife, rAma will be deeply afflicted and devastated. I can then freely strike him down and happily rejoice”.
Listening to this plan of rAvaNa about rAma, mAricha’s mouth dried up and he became deeply agitated.
तस्य रामकथां श्रुत्वा मारीचस्य महात्मनः।
शुष्कं समभवद्वक्त्रं परितप्ता बभूव ह।।3.36.22।।
He licked and wetted his dried up lips and without battling an eyelid stared at rAvaNa and was frozen in fright and distressed! Being completely aware of the capabilities and valor of rAma, he began to speak to rAvaNa with folded hands considering the welfare of both of them.
स रावणं त्रस्तविषण्णचेता महावने रामपराक्रमज्ञः।
कृताञ्जलिस्तत्वमुवाच वाक्यं हितं च तस्मै हितमात्मनश्च।।3.36.24।।
दुश्शीलः कर्कशस्तीक्ष्णो मूर्खो लुब्धोऽजितेन्द्रियः।।3.36.11।।
त्यक्तधर्मो ह्यधर्मात्मा भूतानामहिते रतः।
जानीषे त्वं जनस्थाने यथा भ्राता खरो मम।
दूषणश्च महाबाहु स्वसा शूर्पणखा च मे।।3.36.2।।
त्रिशिराश्च महातेजा राक्षसः पिशिताशनः।
अन्ये च बहवश्शूरा लब्धलक्षा निशाचराः।।3.36.3।।
वसत्नि मन्नियोगेन नित्यवासं च राक्षसाः।
बाधमाना महारण्ये मुनीन्वै धर्मचारिणः।।3.36.4।।
Here we conclude the the thirty sixth sarga of the araNya kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
