Let us begin the one hundred and twelfth sarga of the yuddha kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
rAma’s mission was accomplished. It was time for the usual fall out of transition of power. All the womenfolk of rAvaNa came out to grieve the loss of their beloved. Their grief was paraphrased and epitomized by that of the chief queen manDodarI whose heart-rending soliloquy both exposed rAvaNa’s lust smitten conduct, poor judgment as well as shed light on the good times he had with his queens. The chief queen realized the mission of rAma and identified him as the supreme soul, vishNU himself. She regretted how rAvaNa brushed aside all good counsel to not wage war with rAma and ultimately met his end under tragic circumstances rendering his wives into widows. As this outpouring of grief continued, arrangements were made for the last rites of the demon king as instructed by rAma. The dhArmic king, rAma declared that the enmity has ended with the death of rAvaNa and it was time for a new beginning. Accordingly vibhIshaNa performed the last rites and came to rAma who removed his armour and put aside his battle-wear and assumed a relaxed posture. Onwards…
All the celestials, the gods and the gandharvas, having witnessed the fall of rAvaNa went back to their places in their aerial cars recalling the thrilling spectacle of the valour of rAghava and the vanquishing of rAvaNa. They commended the great fighting spirit of the vAnaras and the leadership of sugrIva. They went back on their way reflecting on the affection of lakshmaNa who was the son of sumitrA, the steadfast devotion of sItA to rAma and the ultimate heroism of hanumAn.
rAghava felicitated mAtali, the charioteer of indra, commended the glorious chariot and with his permission, mAtali went back to the heavens on the divine chariot. As the charioteer ascended the skies, rAma with great love embraced sugrIva and as the vAnara warriors sang his glory and hailed his conquest, he went back to the camp accompanied by them. Then rAma turned to the luminous lakshmaNa who valued truth and said –
“O gentle one, please coronate vibhIshaNa as the king of lanka. He is affectionate, devoted to me and has done me a great favour. Therefore it is my deep desire to see him coronated as the king of lanka”.
विभीषणमिमं सौम्य लङ्कायामभिषेचय ।
अनुरक्तं च भक्तं च मम चैवोपकारिणम् ॥
saumitrI said “so be it” and summoning some of the vAnara warriors, handed them golden pots to fetch waters from the various seas for the purpose of crowning vibhIshaNa. The vAnara warriors lost no time in fetching the waters and all of them made vibhIshaNa sit on a lofty throne in the palace of lanka and lakshmaNa performed the crowning of pure hearted vibhIshaNa as the king of lanka as per the procedures laid down in the scriptures. This was performed as a great celebration in the midst of the demons, vAnaras and the well-wishers as per the command of rAma.
All the vAnaras enjoyed the celebrations and went back to rAma very pleased. The ministers who accompanied vibhIshaNa were delighted. Having obtained the kingdom, vibhIshaNa comforted the citizens and along with other demons, came to rAma bringing with him auspicious articles like turmeric, Kumkum, Akshata etc and worshipped the heroes rAma and lakshmaNa. Pleased with the accomplishment of vibhIshaNa, rAma accepted his worship for the satisfaction of the demon king.
Then turning to the rock-like strong warrior hanumAn who was standing by him with folded hands, rAma said to hanumAn –
अनुज्ञाप्य महाराजम् इमं सौम्य विभीषणम् ।
प्रविश्य नगरीं लङ्काम् कौशलं ब्रूहि मैथिलीम् ॥
“O gentle one, please seek permission from king vibhIshaNa and enter the city of lanka and convey the news of welfare to maithilI. Go and congratulate maithilI on this victory and convey to her the news of my welfare as well as that of lakshmaNa and sugrIva. O great victor, tell her that rAvaNa has been vanquished by me, give her this good news and return with her message”.
Here we conclude the one hundred and twelfth sarga of the yuddha kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
