6.086. indrajit forced out of nikumbhilA

Hari Om.

Let us begin the eighty sixth sarga of the yuddha kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

The timely arrival and advice from vibhIshaNa was critical as rAma regained his composure. The brother of the demon king was aware of the secrets of indrajit. He clearly foresaw the absolute danger that lay ahead of rAma’s army if the indrajit were to complete the sacrifice of nikumbhilA and emerge for the battle from there endowed with a chariot that can go invisible into the skies and armed with deadly weapon of brahmaSirA. He therefore hastened rAma to deploy lakshmaNa on the mission to first destroy the sacrifice before it was completed and then slay indrajit by dragging him out of that altar into the battle. rAma was alert to this timely advice and immediately instructed lakshmaNa to go ahead for the battle and be victorious. The obedient and eager brother took rAma’s blessings and armed with his robust bow and arrows set off to the nikumbhilA edifice along with a large army led by hanumAn and jAmbavAn. The chief advisor vibhIshaNa also followed them with his ministers instructing them about the way to reach there. They soon arrived there and saw a vast army of demons who were very well armed and were guarding the sacrifice being performed by indrajit. Onwards…

Near the place where the nikumbhilA sacrifice was being performed by indrajit which was guarded by a karge army of demons, the brother of the demon king rAvaNa, wishing the fall of the enemy addressed lakshmaNa, the accomplisher of missions –

“Look at this vast army that resembles thick and dark clouds, they need to be vanquished quickly with our tree wielding vAnaras. With your sharp and unrelenting arrows quickly get into action and set the army into disarray by decimating them. As you do so, you will see the son of the demon king emerge out of the edifice where he is busy with the sacrifice. Please dismantle the army before he completes the sacrifice”.

Grasping the instruction of vibhIshaNa, lakshmaNa who was a manifestation of auspiciousness rained barrage of arrows aimed at the son of the demon king. As lakshmaNa got into action, the vAnara army ran towards and attacked the rAkshasa army with large trees and mountain peaks as their weapons and a fierce battle broke out between the two armies. The demons attacked with their sophisticated weapons like arrows, javelins, swords and others. The sky was covered by the projectiles being thrown at each other from both armies and tumultuous noise broke out from their war cries and the clash of weapons which could be heard in lanka. The demons severed the heads and arms of the vAnaras with their weapons. The vAnaras retaliated in greater measure decimating the rAkshasas with their improvised trees and mountain peaks and claimed quite a few warriors from their side. This terrified the ranks of the rAkshasas and it was communicated to indrajit. Learning about the gloom in his ranks caused by the rampaging enemy, the hard-to-beat indrajit got up from his seat leaving the sacrifice incomplete.

Emerging out of the dark shadow of the trees where he was performing the sacrifice, indrajit became livid with anger and got into his chariot that was ready for him. Wielding his formidable bow, resembling the cloud ready for the downpour of deluge, with his eyes red from anger, he resembled the god of death. As soon as the army of demons which was on the backfoot saw him, they returned to fight the army led by lakshmaNa. They went to attack hanumAn, who at that time, standing tall like a mountain wielded a huge tree and was vanquishing the rAkshasa army at will like the fire at the time of great deluge. He destroyed the army and rendered them senseless. The other battalion that swung into action seeing indrajit on the field surrounded hanumAn and attacked him with their weapons and fists. He fought them valiantly and repelled their attack. Noticing that hanumAn was causing quite a damage to his army, indrajit instructed his charioteer to take the chariot to where he was lest none of the demons would be alive if hanumAn was not checked. The charioteer obeyed him and took the chariot to where hanumAn was waging a valiant counter attack.

Having reached where hanumAn was indrajit showered arrows and other weapons aimed at hanumAn. Receiving those weapons aimed at him, hanumAn retorted and said –

“Fight me if you’re a warrior, you wicked son of rAvaNa. Having encountered the son of windgod, you shall not go back alive. Come fight me with your arms and try to withstand my speed”.

Then indrajit got ready with his bow to attack hanumAn and seeing that vibhIshaNa instructed lakshmaNa –

“That vanquisher of indra, the son of rAvaNa is on his chariot and is attacking hanumAn. Haunt him with your unparalleled arrows which are capable of overwhelming the enemy and taking their lives. O saumitrI slay rAvaNi”.

Spoken to thus by the great vibhIshaNa who was hard on his enemies, lakshmaNa beheld that demon who stood like a mountain surrounded by a great force that made loud war cries.
