6.047. The demon king day-dreams

Hari Om.

Let us begin the forty seventh sarga of the yuddha kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

In lanka there were celebrations, albeit premature. The vAnaras were in deep pain and shock as they surrounded their heroes who had fallen. sugrIva was devastated. He shed tears. The despondent times needed someone who could cheer them up. That was perfectly done by vibhIshaNa. He personally wiped the tears of sugrIva and exhorted him. He was sure that rAma and lakshmaNa have not shed their life. They were alive and were only unconscious. He advised sugrIva to guard them and wait for them to revive. He also philosophised on the likely outcomes of war which may not always go as per expectations. Having comforted sugrIva, he instructed the vAnara leaders to guard the duo and went to regroup the scattered vAnara army. In the meanwhile indrajit reached lanka and broke the news to his father who had lost much sleep. The ten-headed demon was jubilant and felicitated his valiant son. Onwards…

As indrajit accomplished his task and entered lanka, the vAnara leaders hanumAn, angada, nIla, sushENa, kumuda, nala, gaja, gavAksha, gavaya, Sarabha, gandhamAdana, jAmbavAn, Rshabha, skandha, rambha, Satabali and pRthu arranged their armies properly and with large trees in their hands kept vigil of rAma and lakshmaNa constantly inspecting on all sides, up and down and even suspected the movement of a blade of grass to be the doing of the demons.

In the meanwhile, rAvaNa, having felicitated his son indrajit, sent him off and summoned one of the guards of sItA by name trijaTa [5.27] and ordered –

“Listen, counting on whose valour, sItA never yielded to me, that rAma, her husband has been felled in the war along with his brother lakshmaNa. Take her in the pushpaka vimAna, the aerial chariot and show her that both rAma and lakshmaNa are lying dead in the battle field. Now without any other doubts, hopes, expectations and grief, let her wait for me fully decorated. Now that the duo have met their end, the wide eyed sItA, will have no where else to go and will yield to me by herself”.

Having received the orders from the wicked rAvaNa, the guard trijaTa with others fetched pushpaka vimAna and went to the aSOka grove to meet sItA. She was grieving about her husband and they made her to board the pushpaka. They took the aerial chariot to fly across lanka and the battle field. She saw demons announcing in the streets to everyone’s delight that rAma and lakshmaNa were killed by indrajit in the battle. Then flying over the battle field, sItA saw some of the vAnara army lying around defeated and dead on the ground. She saw ecstatic demons and devastated vAnaras by the side of rAma and lakshmaNa who lied on an arrow of beds, unconscious, their armours scattered and their bodies hit badly by arrows all over. Beholding the brothers who were lying on the ground, like the sons of the fire god, sItA was desperate, devastated and wailed loudly. She was disconsolate. Beholding the prince duo who were as valorous as the gods, she wondered if they were really dead and spoke the following words consumed by total grief.
