Hari Om.
Let us begin the twenty seventh sarga of the yuddha kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
With the advancement of rAma’s army towards lanka, the anxiety in rAvaNa was growing and he deployed two of his spies to infiltrate into the vAnara army in disguise and learn about their key warriors and strategies. The duo Suka and sAraNa did that in form of vAnaras and tried but were apprehended, thrashed and produced before rAma. As always, the compassionate rAma who makes no distinction between friend and foe when it comes to dharma, let them go but before that added they make quiz vibhIshaNa and know everything they wanted to know before going back. The vAnara army was so power packed that it was good to make the enemy know who they will be up against and exercise the possibility to stop the bloodshed. It was also the supreme confidence rAma had in his abilities that he had no hesitation to make the enemy know their key warriors and formation. The duo were grateful for being spared, went back to rAvaNa and advised him to return sItA. As always he spurned it with some chest thumping and went on to the terrace of his palace with the duo to take a look at the enemy. He was aghast and the duo started describing the who’s who of the army of sugrIva and the size of their battallions. Onwards…
As rAvaNa looked on, the spy sAraNa continued –
“well then, as you continue to look at them, let me tell you about the warriors who do not bother about their own life while fighting for rAghava. Here is the warrior chief by name hara who has a very long tail which he drags on the earth and the fur on it shines like the rays of the sun in a variety of hues – copper, yellow and white. He is followed by hundreds and thousands of vAnara subordinates who are eager to attack lanka with the trees that they are wielding. They desire to win over you in the battle.
There you see the innumerable Rkshas (bears) who resemble dark clouds and look like an ocean. They are on the mountains and the riverbanks. They are all coming for you, O king. Right in the middle of them all is the warrior named dhUmra whose eyes are terrifying as is his form. He lives on the great mountain RkshavAn on the banks of river narmadA.
There you see his younger brother called jAmbavAn who is a chief among the warriors. He resembles his brother dhUmra but is of even greater valour. His name is jAmbvAn. He is heroic, loyal to his leader and is unforgiving in his attacks. He has rendered great help to indra in the past during the conflict between the demons and gods and has secured many boons.
Then you see a supremely mighty fighter by name dambha whose army has scaled the mountains and are wielding large boulders and throwing those without fearing for their life. They resembled the demons and are hairy like the devils and have fire like splendour. O king he indeed resembles the thousand eyed indra.
Then you see the grand daddy of the vANaras – sannAdana. He is so huge in his size that with one leap he can leave behind a mountain and similarly if he leaps up he can go as far as one yOjana. He stood up to indra in the past and was undefeated. He is was born of a gandharva woman by agni in order to help in the battle between the gods and the demons.
Then this very powerful warrior krathana lives near the mountain full of jambu trees where you brother kubEra frequents for his pleasure trips. He is gearing up to siege lanka with his own army.
Then see the unbeatable warrior pramAthi. He roams the banks of the gangA tormenting elephants remembering the old enmity between the vAnaras and the elephants. Even the great mountains like mandara are like a small seed for him. He is accompanied by extremely powerful hundreds and thousands of vAnara warriors and leads them.
Then the gOlangUla vAnaras led by gavaksha who are terrifying and black faced and are kicking up quite a dust as they move have overseen the construction of the sEtu. They are all charged up to come and destroy lanka with their own might.
This chief warrior by name kEsari revels and resides on the golden mountain where the trees are always in bloom and bear fruits, where bees buzz busily, where due to the golden glitter of the mountain all the birds and beasts look golden and which place is never deserted by the great sages. There are six thousands peaks in the golden mountains and in the middle of those live these copper and white faced vAnaras who have sharp claws, have canines like the lions and are unapproachable like the tigers. They are all fiery, hiss like venomous serpents, have long tails and are intoxicated like wild elephants. They are elephantine in form and thunder like the clouds. They have round eyes that are red and are very agile. They are casting a death glare on lanka. Their leader is in the middle of them and is famous by the name Satabali. He is raring to go after lanka.
Then there are heroic, valorous, mighty and determined warriors gaja, gavAksha, gavaya, nala and nIla. None of them care for their life eager to please rAma. Each one of them has a battalion of tens of crores of vAnaras. Then there are innumerable agile vAnaras who are residents of the vindhya mountains and due to the enormity of the numbers it is not possible to enumerate them.
तथाऽऽन्येवानरश्रेष्ठाविन्ध्यपर्वतवासिनः ।
नशक्यन्तेबहुत्वात्तुसङ् ख्यातुंलघुविक्रमाः ।।6.27.47।।
O great king, all of them are highly capable, all are mountainous in size and can smash the whole earth its mountain into pieces in a matter of minutes”.
