Let us begin the second sarga of the yuddha kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
What hanumAn accomplished had huge implications. In fact, if he had not accomplished there were unimaginable repercussions about which he had speculated when he was despondent and had not seen sItA yet. And hence, through the success of the mission, hanumAn had in one stroke saved the ikshvAku clan as well as sugrIva’s clan. This was not lost upon rAma. He was deeply touched by the humility, might, valor, determination and peerless ability of hanumAn. He heaped praise on hanumAn invoking the principle of recognition of a servant as being excellent, mediocre or terrible depending upon their diligence and initiative to help the cause of their lord.
Usually the best way to repay a debt to someone is to do the same in kind. However, rAma would not wish that hanumAn ever landed in such trouble as the one he was in. Hence, he warmly embraced hanumAn and said that the debt of gratitude may just be absorbed in his body. Thinking ahead, the vast ocean and the manner in which the vAnara army could cross it raised doubt in rAma’s mind. The joy of the success of hanumAn was short lived as he was lost in thought unable to find a way in which the task ahead will be accomplished. Onwards…
Addressing the concern of rAma who was anxious about how the army would reach lanka, the illustrious sugrIva said –
“O warrior, how is it that you are lamenting like ordinary folk? Don’t be so. Discard this pessimism and the grief arising out of it like a good friend discards betrayal.
किंत्वंसन्तप्यसेवीर यथान्यःप्राकृतस्तथा ।
मैवंभूस्त्यजसन्तापंकृतघ्नइवसौहृदम् ।।6.2.2।।
I don’t see any scope for your grief here since we have identified the abode of our enemy. O rAghava, you are intelligent, knower of the SAstras, wise and learned. Give up this anxiety like a determined and successful person gives up anything that spoils the means of achievement. We will cross the ocean that is the home of the aquatic animals, breach the fort of the enemy and vanquish your enemy. The despondent and dejected will grieve endlessly and all his efforts will come to a naught as he will be overwhelmed by sorrow.
इमेशूरास्समर्थाश्चसर्वनोहरियूथपाः ।
त्वत्प्रियार्थंकृतोत्साहाःप्रवेष्टुमपिपावकम् ।
एषांहर्षेणजानामितर्कश्चास्मिन् दृढोमम ।।6.2.7।।
Look at these vAnara warriors. They are capable, determined to bring you delight and success and will not step back from entering into the fire for your sake. Their enthusiasm bolsters my belief. You must plan such that we reach lanka, annihilate rAvaNa by your prowess and reunite with sItA. Please focus on how the bridge can be built across the ocean which will take us to lanka, the city of the demon king. Be sure, if we so much as cross the ocean and behold lanka situated on the mount trikUTa, the demon king is dead.
If a bridge cannot be built across the ocean, even the gods and the demons cannot seize lanka. Once we cross over the ocean and sight lanka, be sure that my vAnara warriors, capable of assuming any form at will can ensure our victory. So, O king, please discard this despondency that is detrimental for achievement. Grief undoes the valor of warriors. Just as a man adopts heroism to achieve his goal, in this time, O wise one, rise up and swear by your courage and illustriousness. Sorrow is the biggest enemy of men in times of adversity as it destroys everything. O best among intellectuals and expert in all the Sastras, with able ministers such as myself you shall win over your enemy. In the three worlds, O rAghava, I do not see anyone who dares to face you in the battle when you stand wielding your bow. The responsibility you have vested in the vAnaras will not go waste and soon you will see sItA.
तदलंशोकमालम्ब्यक्रोधमालम्बभूपते ।
निश्चेष्टाःक्षत्रियामन्दास्सर्वेचण्डस्यबिभ्यति ।।6.2.20।।
Therefore, O king, enough of misery. Adopt anger that prods you to action. A kshatriya with inaction is timid and gets scared of battle. With your sharp intellect brainstorm on how the vAnaras can cross over the ocean. As soon as they cross over and reach lanka, these vAnaras who can assume any form, will unleash trees and boulders on the enemy and destroy them.
Well, why belabor this point in a variety of ways – you are already successful. I see good omens all around and ecstasy fills my mind”.
Here we conclude the second sarga of the yuddha kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
