5.59. The master communicator exhorts his mates

Hari Om.

Let us begin the fifty ninth sarga of the sundara kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

The unmatched vAnara returned triumphantly to a hero’s welcome on the norther shore of the ocean having accomplished the laid out goals of the mission and even exceeding it. The vAnaras who were mortally scared of what news hanumAn would be bring were not just relieved but were ecstatic when they heard the word “Seen” from hanumAn, perhaps not even bothering to hear the second word! They erupted in joy and felicitated their saviour in a variety of ways. Once they were done, the vAnaras sat around hanumAn and requested him to tell them the details of how he went, how he could see sItA, how she was and what was to be reported and what was for their own consumption. Then hanumAn gave a tell-tale account from the time he leapt south to the time of return. This is also a fantastic way of writing where mahaRshi vAlmIki provides a review of the story so far. Onwards…

Having narrated the entire episode of his journey and exploits, hanumAn continued speaking further emphatically –

सफलो राघवोद्योग स्सुग्रीवस्य च सम्भ्रमः।

शीलमासाद्य सीताया मम च प्रवणं मनः।।5.59.2।।

“The mission of rAma has succeeded and sugrIva’s anxiety has ensured it. The conduct and character of sItA has created the conviction in me that nothing is impossible for her and that her anger can indeed burn the three worlds to ashes. Her anger can do what fire cannot. Despite touching her if rAvaNa didn’t turn into ashes it is due to his penance.  I seek the input from jAmbavAn and other vAnara warriors if it will be appropriate to go with vaidEhI and see the two princes. I alone am enough to vanquish the entire city of lanka along with the mighty rAvaNa. Then just imagine along with you all who are valorous, mighty, accomplished and eager to win what we can accomplish! I will destroy rAvaNa along with his followers, army, sons and his brothers, no matter whether they use the brahmAstra or roudrAstra or vAyvAstra or varuNAstra. Even if indrajit uses astras that are invisible, I will destroy them all and kill the demons. Sanctioned by you, I will rain boulders on them and show my prowess with which I can even vanquish the gods, what to speak of those nocturnal demons. Even if the ocean crosses its limits, the mount mandara shakes, jAmbavAn cannot be shaken by the enemy forces. To destroy the entire hordes of demons the son of vAli, angada alone is enough. The speed of panasa and the great nIla can shatter the mighty mandara mountain then what to speak of the demons. Can you tell me who among the gods, demons, yakshas, gandharvas, nAgas and the avian species can stand up to mainda and dvivida, the sons of the duo aSwini dEvas? The very gifted mainda and dvivida have consumed the nectar of immortality by bashing a large number of demons and are proud and invincible. Even if no other vAnara heads to the war this duo is enough to devastate the entire lot of the demons.

The city of lanka has been burnt into ashes by me and I have hailed rAma, lakshamaNa, sugrIva and announced my name and identity on all the royal roads.

In the middle of the aSoka grove of the crooked rAvaNa, the noble lady is in a pitiable state under the SimSapa tree, surrounded by the ogresses and grieving. She is lustreless like the light of the clouded moon. But she doesn’t think highly of the conceited rAvaNa. She is chaste, devoted to her husband even though she is under captivity. With all her heart she is devoted to rAma without any other thought like poulOmI is devoted to indra. Wearing that same cloth as what we have seen during her abduction, she is immersed in sorrow and helpless but devoted to the welfare of her husband. I have seen her being tortured by the crooked ogresses again and again. She us squatting on the floor, is lustreless like the lotus at the onset of snow. She detests rAvaNa and is ready to even end her life.

Somehoe I could inspire confidence in the deer-eyed beauty. I spoke to her and detailed her the efforts being undertaken to save her. Hearing about the friendship of rAma and sugrIva she was delighted. Being chaste, having great character she has not killed rAvaNa due to the devotion she has towards her husband and she wants rAma to kill rAvaNa and save her even though she is capable of burning him. rAma will be an instrument in the killing of rAvaNa.

Being naturally lean, she has gone down further due to the grief of separation from rAma and she resembles a miserable disciple who studies on the first day after the new moon.

[The vEdic gurukulas don’t have holidays on Sunday. They are closed for teaching on new moon, full moon days, the first day after those (pratipad) and the eighth day of the fortnight. Tradition says learning on the first day after new and full moon destroys one’s education. Hence the misery. This sloka underscores the gurukula practice, not only of that time but even today]

This is how the noble sItA is in absolute grief. Let us do what all is appropriate now”.

Here we conclude the fifty ninth sarga of the sundara kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
