5.43. hanumAn serves a stern warning

Hari Om.

Let us begin the forty third sarga of the sundara kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

Having accomplished the mission of locating sItA, hanumAn was now gearing up for new challenge. He argued that if he can grasp the relative strengths of the demons with respect to the vAnaras, and if it can be accomplished without endangering the original goal of the mission, he must explore the possibility of doing that. With that thought in mind, he launched a calculative assault and destroyed the aSOkA grove. As per his expectation, the matter was reported to rAvaNa and he was outraged. One reason for his outrage was the destruction of his coveted pleasure grove while the more important reason was the report that hanumAn spoke to sItA. He at once dispatched eighty thousand strong force to vanmquish hanumAn. In turn, the eighty thousand bit the dust and hanumAn waited back at the arch proclaiming the winning mantra, hailing rAma and awaiting his turn to bash more demons! Onwards…

Sitting on the arch, hanumAn contemplated –

“I destroyed the pleasure grove but have spared the shrine like palace so far. I shall now destroy this”. Thinking thus, he jumped to where that mountainous majestic palace stood. Displaying his great might, he scaled the tall palace and with his dazzling valour he appeared like another sun. He again grew to gigantic proportions on top of that palace and resembled the mountain pariyAtra. The enormous and menacing hanumAn patted his shoulders and let out a loud roar. By the impact of his roar the flying birds and the guards of the palace fainted and fell down.

अस्त्रविज्जयतां रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः।

राजा जयति सुग्रीवो राघवेणाभिपालितः।।5.43.8।।

May rAma, the wielder of a great repertoire of weapons be victorious. May the mighty lakshmaNa be victorious. May the king sugrIva under the protection of rAma be victorious. I am the servitor of the lord of kOSala who can carry out the most difficult of tasks in a trice with ease. My name is hanumAn, the son of the wind god and vanquisher of the enemies. Even a thousand rAvaNas are no match for might and can’t stand me. I will unleash boulders and trees in thousands and torment the city of lanka. Paying my salutations to the daughter of janaka, I will go back accomplished as the demons keep watching”!

Standing on that gOpuram as he proclaimed thus in thunderous voice, the demons were terrified. The guards of the palace gathered their weapons, variety of maces, spears, swords, axes and shining arrows, approached hanumAn and hurled those at him. As they surrounded him and tried to attack him, the commotion appeared like a whirlpool in the river ganga. mAruti (hanumAn) was enraged by them, he uprooted a multi-edged golden pillar of the palace and whirled it intensely. The whirling produced fire and the mansion caught the fire and burnt. He then attacked the demons who surrounded him using the same pillar like indra made short work of the demons using his thunderbolt. hanumAn then took to the skies and levitating there, he announced –

hanumAn whacks the demons. Pic from here.

“Thousands of vAnaras like me have been created. They are extremely mighty and are freely roaming the earth under the command of sugrIva. Some of them have the strength of ten elephants, some more than that. Some are as mighty as a thousand elephants. Some are irrepressible like the floods, some are unstoppable like the wind. The strength of some of them is beyond comprehension. Surrounded by hudreds of thousands and crores of such vAnaras who have their canines and sharp nails as their weapons, sugrIva your vanquisher shall descend soon. Having secured unpardonable enmity with the great lord of the ikshvAkus, neither lanka, nor you nor rAvaNa will remain.

नेयमस्ति पुरी लङ्का न यूयं न च रावणः।5.43.25।।

यस्मादिक्ष्वाकुनाथेन बद्धं वैरं महात्मना।

Here we conclude the forty third sarga of the sundara kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
