Let us begin the thirty ninth sarga of the sundara kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
With sItA flatly refusing to take a ride back to rAma and justifying it embellishing and demonstrating her chastity, hanumAn asked for an appropriate mark of recognition to be presented to rAma so that he can be convinced of her being found. She presented her crest jewel to be given to rAma which was so small for the now giant hanumAn that he had to wear it on his finger! She then narrated an incidence to which only she and rAma were witness and asked him to narrate it to him. It was about a crow called kAkAsura who was troubling sItA when rAma was taking a nap and then learning about this misadventure how a livid rAma fired a blazing blade of grass after invoking the deadly and unsparing brahmAstra into it. The fatal weapon chased the crow who went round and was refused shelter by indra and everyone else in three worlds since it was being hounded by rAma’s weapon. Finally the crow sought refuge at rAma’s feet and secured his life sacrificing his right eye to the brahmAstra by rAma’s concurrence. sItA asked why the peerless rAma was being indifferent to her now while he didn’t spare the crow then! She elaborately sent her inquiries and well wishes to rAma and especially lakshmaNa with him she was very rude [3.45] leading to the current predicament. hanumAn assured her that it was just a matter of he going back and then the duo along with vAnara and bear army would seize lanka, destroy rAvaNa and rescue her. Onwards…
Having given her crest jewel as a mark of identification to hanumAn, sItA said to him –
“rAma knows this identification mark very well and will remember three of us upon seeing this – me, my mother and my father-in-law daSaratha. O best of vAnaras, your spirits have been ignited now, the responsibility of this mission rests on you and hence think very well about how to execute the task ahead and ensure that my misery is destroyed”.
त्वमस्मिन्कार्यनिर्योगे प्रमाणं हरिसत्तम।
हनुमन्यत्नमास्थाय दुःखक्षयकरो भव।।5.39.4।।
तस्य चिन्तयतो यत्नो दुःखक्षयकरो भवेत्।
The gigantic and valorous hanumAn agreed, bowed down to vaidEhI and was ready to return to rAma. Realizing that hanumAn was about to go back, dEvI sItA shed copious tears and again said to him –
“O hanumAn, please convey my inquiries of welfare to rAma, lakshmaNa, sugrIva and all the elderly vAnaras in a manner as laid down in the traditions. You must so console rAghava that he ensures my crossing of this ocean of grief.
यथा स च महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः।
अस्माद्धुःखाम्बुसंरोधात्त्वं समाधातुमर्हसि।।5.39.9।।
Your spirited conversations full of vigour will certainly raise the spirits of rAghava to gain me back and please pep him up in such a way that the illustrious rAma wins me back alive. Listening to my message duly conveyed by you, heroic rAghava will get into action”.
hanumAn again bowed down in reverence to sItA and said –
“kAkutstha shall grace very soon surrounded by towering leaders of the vAnara and bear army, vanquish the enemy in battle and drive away your sorrow. I don’t see that anyone among men, demons or gods who will fancy to be in the path of his unleashed arrows. He can even put up with arka (sun), parjanya (varuNa) or even the god of death (yama) in battle for your sake. He deserves to rule over the entire earth extending to the oceans. rAma will surely be victorious in your cause, O daughter of janaka”.
sItA was very pleased to listen to these truthful, earnest and sincere articulation of hanumAn and was convinced about what he said. She repeatedly cast her glances at hanumAn who was ready to leave and out of great love for her husband, she spoke affectionately and said –
“O hero, if you so please, stay back for a day in a safe place, take rest and return tomorrow. Due to your presence here for some more time this unfortunate woman will be relieved of her misery for some more time. Although you are leaving only to return, there is no guarantee of my life when you return. It is uncertain. Not seeing you would compound my misery. O hero, this doubt haunts me about the capabilities of the vAnara and bears to help in this matter? How will they or the princes or you cross this impossible ocean together? Either garuDa or the wind god or you, only you three might be able to cross this ocean.
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्यास्य लङ्घने।
शक्तिस्स्याद्वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य वा।।5.39.26।।
तदस्मिन्कार्यनिर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे।
किं पश्यसि समाधानं त्वं हि कार्यविदां वरः।।5.39.27।।
Therefore, O accomplisher, what solution do you foresee to this impossible problem? You may well be able to pull off this mission and that success would bring you great fame. If rAghava accompanied by the great army ravages lanka with his arrows, becomes victorious and takes me back to his abode, that will be befitting to his stature. O hanumAn, plan it is such a manner that the valour of the heroic rAma who is a champion of the battles gets manifested”.
hanumAn listened to this well-articulated and logical point of sItA in entirety and said –
“O dEvi, the leader of the army of the vAnaras and Rkshas (bears), the very mighty sugrIva is determined in your cause. He will be accompanied by crores and crores of vAnaras and soon come to destroy the demons. At his beck and call he has valiant, substantive and extremely mighty vAnaras who have the speed of the mind. They are unhindered by any being no matter how and where they travel. More e than once, these heroes have circumambulated the earth together with its oceans.
मद्विशिष्टाश्च तुल्याश्च सन्ति तत्र वनौकसः।
मत्तः प्रत्यवरः कश्चिन्नास्ति सुग्रीवसन्निधौ।।5.39.38।।
Forest dwellers who are in the team of sugrIva are either equal to me or superior than me and there is no one who is inferior to me. Therefore, if I have made it thus far, what to speak of those mighty heroes. The special and very capable ones are never sent as messengers, it is only the ordinary ones who are entrusted with that duty. Hence, O dEvi, enough of this misery, let your sorrow be gone. The vAnara warriors will cross the ocean in one leap! The lion like duo riding on my back will come over for your sake and rise over lanka like the sun and the moon, vanquish rAvaNa along with his kith and kin, destroy lanka with their arrows and take you to his abode along with him.
Wellness be up on you, be assured and await good times. You will before long behold a fiery rAma who will annihilate the demons and you will be united with rAma like rOhiNI is united with the moon. You will soon cross the ocean of grief”.
Having comforted, consoled and assured vaidEhI thus, hanumAn made up his mind to return and again assured vaidEhi –
“You will soon see rAghava, the vanquisher of foes along with lakshmaNa wielding bow at the threshold of lanka. Along with them will be elephantine and mighty vAnaras and Rkshas with sharp teeth and nails. These towering leaders will hover over lanka with their dark cloud like forms.
Like an elephant tormented by lion, rAma, smitten by the arrows of the love god, gets no joy. Don’t cry O dEvi and don’t sulk. You have a lord like Sachi ha indra.
रामाद्विशिष्टः कोऽन्योऽस्ति कश्चित्सौमित्रिणा समः।
अग्निमारुतकल्पौ तौ भ्रातरौ तव संश्रयौ।।5.39.53।।
Who is there better than rAma and who can be equal to saumitri? That duo like the fire and water are your refuge.
नास्मिंश्चिरं वत्स्यसि देवि देशे रक्षोगणैरध्युषितेऽतिरौद्रे।
न ते चिरादामगमनं प्रियस्य क्षमस्व मत्सङ्गमकालमात्रम्।।5.39.54।।
O dEvi, in this unfavourable territory you will not dwell for very long, you will unite with your beloved, just wait until I go back to him”.
Here we conclude the thirty ninth sarga of the sundara kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
