Hari Om.
Let us begin the forty seventh sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
Watching sugrIva rattle off the names of the places to be encountered in each direction to the quest team was spectacular indeed. While it surely would have made the team aware that they have to be extremely diligent in their task, it stirred the curiosity of rAma himself who was stunned at the detailed geographic knowledge. Without demur, rAma asked sugrIva as to how he knew about the entire earth! In response, sugrIva narrated how when he fell out with vAlI, his elder brother, determined to get rid of him, chased him all over the earth. As he got chased thus, sugrIva went round the earth trying to escape vAlI and that is when he mapped the entire earth in his mind! The expedition squads left in their respective directions and the stipulated month was fast approaching completion. Onwards…
The vAnara warriors left at once in order to find sItA as per the orders of the king, sugrIva. They searched by the lakes, rivers, in the skies, cities, citadels, hills, caves and everywhere else. By the day, the warriors would search everywhere that sugrIva instructed them including the mountain ranges, forests etcand by the night, they would assemble together.
विचित्य दिवसं सर्वे सीताधिगमने धृताः।
समायान्ति स्म मेदिन्यां निशाकालेषु वानराः।।4.47.4।।
This routine of searching everywhere they were asked to would be carried out in the day before returning to fruit laden trees by the night disappointed. In this manner, a month passed by and they returned to the mount praSravaNa as per the stipulation of time set by sugrIva.
From the easter direction, the mighty warrior vinata returned with his commanders, warrior SatabalI returned with his army from the northern direction while having searched thoroughly in the western direction, sushENa returned with his vAnara army. They all reached the mount praSravaNa where sugrIva camped along with rAma and lakshmaNa and reported –
“O king, we have thoroughly searched through the caves and through the foliage that you described. We covered interiors of the land, treacherous and difficult-to-go places and in the process we have slayed many a mighty being. The impenetrable regions have been searched again and again.
उदारसत्त्वाभिजनो महात्मा स मैथिलीं द्रक्ष्यति वानरेन्द्रः।
दिशं तु यामेव गता तु सीता तामास्थितोवायुसुतो हनूमान्।।4.47.14।।
The great hanumAn of exalted strength and great lineage, the son of the wind god has gone in the direction of south, the same sirection into which sItA was carried away. He shall certainly find sItA, o king of vAnaras”.
