Let us begin the forty sixth sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
In summoning the who’s who of the vAnara warriors for rAma’s mission, in picking appropriate teams for the search in each direction, in providing detailed handouts of the regions the forces will come across during their quest, in showing carrot and stick in good measure to all of them, in identifying the direction and warrior with whom his chances lied the most – sugrIva demonstrated that he was the supreme rulers of the vAnaras with complete control over his forces, complete mastery of the mission, knack of inspiring and threatening the teams in equal measure and fantastic judgment. He showed skill, courage, valor, intelligence and royalty. No wonder, all the vAnaras respected him, some even grudgingly so! They left for their ordered directions after assuring sugrIva that they shall succeed in the mission given to them. Now even rAma was surprised at the detailed geographic knowledge of sugrIva and couldn’t help his curiosity. Onwards…
गतेषु वानरेन्द्रेषु रामस्सुग्रीवमब्रवीत्।
कथं भवान्विजानीते सर्वं वै मण्डलं भुवः।।4.46.1।।
As all the vAnara warriors left for the respective quarters as oart of the quest, rAma exclaimed and asked sugrIva – “How is it that you are well versed with the entire regions of the earth”?
Asked thus, the self assured sugrIva prostrated to rAma and said – “listen, O best among men, I shall tell you in detail. vAlI chased the demon dundubhI came in form a buffalo all the way until the malaya mountain in order to kill him. To escape from vAlI, dundubhI entered into a cave in that mountain. Determined to sly him, vAlI entered as well while I waited for vAlI humbly at the mouth of the cave for a complete year. There was no sign of vAlI coming out and in the meanwhile I saw blood flowing fast in the cave. I was stunned and filled with the grief of having possibly lost my brother. In that grief, I closed the mouth of the cave with a large boulder so that the demon doesn’t come out and perishes in the cave and with a heavy heart returned to kishkindhA. Having come to kishkindhA and with vAlI dead, I ruled over the kingdom in the company of both rumA and tArA and my wellwishers.
In the meanwhile, vAlI returned having slain the demon. Out of respect and fear, I returned the kingdom, but the evil minded vAlI was not satisfied and deeply hurt in his senses, he chased me with an intention to kill me. I ran away being chased by vAlI and on the way I saw the various rivers, forests and cities. With my swift movement I encircled the earth like the firebrand and seemed to reduced it to the size of a hoof of a cow and to the surface of a mirror.
I ran east and beheld variety o foliage, mountains, lovely streams and ponds. I went all the way till the mountain udaya that is laden with minerals and also the ocean kshIrOdA that is ever an abode of the apsaras. While I saw all these, vAlI continued to chase me and then I having retraced my way back, then headed to the southern direction replete with the ranges of the vindhyA mountain bearing the sandalwood trees. After seeing all these, I then went west westward while vAlI continued to chase me. In the western direction, I went all the until where the sun sets and then ran north. I went to the himavAn mountain (himAlayas), mErU, the northern sea but there was no respite from vAlI.
It was then that my highly intelligent minister hanumAn said –
इदानीं मे स्मृतं राजन् यथा वाली हरीश्वरः ।
मतङ्गेन तदा शप्तो ह्यस्मिन्नाश्रममण्डले ।।4.46.21।।
प्रविशेद्यदि वै वाली मूर्धाऽस्य शतधा भवेत् ।
तत्र वासस्सुखोऽस्माकम् निरुद्विग्नो भविष्यति।।4.46.22।।
‘O king, it is only now that I remember that the king of vAnaras vAlI is under the spell of a terrible curse by the sage matanga. The sage cursed and said, if vAlI entered this region around the hermitage, his head shall split into a hundred pieces instantly. I believe we can live there happily and without grief’.
O rAma, then we came to this mountain RshyamUka where vAlI never entered, terrified by the curse of sage matanga. O king, this is how I have personally witnessed the entire regions of the earth before being confined to this cave on RshyamUka”!
एवं मया तदा राजन् प्रत्यक्षमुपलक्षितम् ।
पृथिवीमण्डलं कृत्स्नम् गुहामस्यागतस्ततः ॥।।4.46.24।।
Here we conclude the forty sixth sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
