Let us begin the thirty ninth sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
After tArA calmed a raging lakshmaNa with her astute handling of the situation and brilliant articulation, sugrIva also apologized to him. In return, lakshmaNa also expressed his mild regret for blasting sugrIva and the two put the tense situation behind them. Soon sugrIva ordered the vAnara warriors to go all over the earth to various habitats where the vAnaras lived and serve them warrants to report to him within ten days or face the real axe. The warriors did so and a humongous vAnara army was all set to descend in the vicinity of kishkindhA leaping in from all the quarters. Soon, lakshmaNa and sugrIva accompanied by other vAnaras left to report to rAma who was waiting on the praSravaNa mountains. rAma affectionately received sugrIva and briefly, mildly and indirectly chastised him reminding him of the qualities of a good king. The vAnara lord updated rAma about the efforts that have been undertaken towards fulfilling the mission of finding sItA. rAma was happy to learn of the efforts. Onwards…
As sugrIva updated with folded hands about the progress made in securing the vAnara army, rAma embraced him tightly in delight and said –
यदिन्द्रो वर्षते वर्षं न तच्चित्रं भवेत्क्वचित्।
आदित्यो वा सहस्रांशुः कुर्याद्वितिमिरं नभः।।4.39.2।।
चन्द्रमा रश्मिभिः कुर्यात्पृथिवीं सौम्य निर्मलाम्।
त्वद्विधो वाऽपि मित्राणां प्रतिकुर्यात्परन्तप ।।4.39.3।।
“Indeed, just like indra causing rains, the Sun of innumerable rays dispelling darkness from the skies and the moon showering coolness on the earth doesn’t cause news, someone like you who is good natured and sweet spoken doing good to his friends is hardly surprising. I know you as a well spoken vAnara. O friend, with you by my side, I shall defeat every foe in the battle. With your help, I shall soon vanquish with my unerring arrows the despicable demon rAvaNa who for his own peril abducted maithilI just like indra, the slayer of demons, killed the father of pulOmI who tricked his daughter into being abducted by anuhlAda and secured his wife”.
In the meanwhile huge dust kicked up in the sky, covering the light and heat of the hot sun, engulfing the quarters in darkness, the earth, hills and the forests shook as mighty and mountainous vAnaras with their sharp teeth descended. The earth was covered in no time with innumerable vAnara warriors who were habitants of the riversides, sea shores, hills and forests and made thunderous noise. In complexion, some of them were like the rising sun, some were white like the moon, some were like the stalk of the lotus, some were snow white.
In the meanwhile, the mighty vAnara by name SatabalI appeared surrounded by ten thousand crore vAnaras.
Then the habitants of the golden mountains, the valorous father of tArA descended surrounded by several thousand crores of vAnaras.
Then the illustrious father-in-law of sugrIva, the father of rumA arrived with another thousand crore vAnaras. They were in the complexion of lotus pollen and that of the rising sun.
Up came the intelligent and the best among the vAnaras, the celebrated father of hanumAn – kEsarI surrounded by several thousand warrior vAnaras.
A vAnara named gavaksha of terrific valor came accompanied by a thousand crore gOlangula (characterized by a different appearance) vAnaras.
dhUmra, the slayer of enemies came surrounded by two crore bears. The vAnara panasa came accompanied by three crore majestic vAnaras.
The warrior by name nIla came along with ten crores of vAnaras who looked imposing like dark clouds. Then another vAnara warrior with golden complexion, gavaya came accompanied by five crore vANaras.
The mighty darImukha came to sugrIva with a thousand crore vAnaras and the vigorous mainda and dvivida were accompanied by crores of crores of vAnaras. The effulgent vAnara gaja came with three crore vAnaras. The king of bears, brilliant jAmabavAn came surrounded by ten crore bears.
The effulgent rumaNa with a hundred crore vAnaras, gandhamAdana with a thousand crore vAnaras, angada equal in valor to his father vAlI with a thousand padmas and a hundred Sankus of vAnaras, tAra of starry brilliance with five crore vAnaras, indrajAnu with eleven crore vAnaras, rambha of rising sun’s complexion with a hundred thousand vAnaras, the general durmukha with two crore vAnaras arrived.
A thousand crore vAnaras each towering and imposing in stature like the peaks of the kailAsa mountain accompanied hanumAn. The very valorous nala with a hundred crore vAnaras, dadhimukha with ten crore vAnaras, Sarabha, kumuda, vahni and ramha arrived.
Along with these several other vAnaras, who could assume any form at will filled up the entire earth, hills and forests. The innumerable vAnaras staying all over the earth came jumping, leaping, roaring and reported sugrIva like the clouds surround the sun.
आप्लवन्तः प्लवन्तश्च गर्जन्तश्च प्लवङ्गमाः।
अभ्यवर्तन्त सुग्रीवं सूर्यमभ्रगणा इव।।4.39.40।।
The mighty armed and strong vAnaras making a variety of noises came and bowed their heads to sugrIva and having reached him they stood with folded hands.
sugrIva then submitted to rAma the advent of the innumerable vAnaras who stood there with hands folded and the knower of dharma then instructed the vAnara leaders to feel at home in the hills, forests, by the rivers around taking care of their battalions, ascertaining their number and in a fighting fit condition.
Here we conclude the thirty ninth sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!
