4.37. sugrIva cracks the whip

Hari Om.

Let us begin the thirty seventh sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

After storming into the bastion of sugrIva all by himself propelled by the anger of rAma on the perceived inaction on part of the vAnara king, lakshmaNa was tactfully welcomed by tArA. Almost undone by the tender womanliness of tArA’s speech well complimented by tactful taunts and unfailing logic, lakshmaNa was heralded into the chamber of sugrIva. Livid upon seeing him indulgent, lakshmaNa blasted him but again tArA came to the rescue and argued sugrIva’s case successfully. Grasping the climb down of lakshmaNa from his body language, sugrIva joined the party and on his own apologized to lakshmaNa and underscored that rAma was indeed responsible for all his glory. By now, lakshmaNa was pacified and he instructed to sugrIva to at once report to rAma along with him while also asking forgiveness for his harsh talk. The two parties chilled and now the quest could begin anytime. Onwards…

Thus spoken to by the magnanimous lakshmaNa, sugrIva then turned to hanumAn who was by his side and said –

sugrIva takes charge. Pic from here.

“Summon immediately the vAnaras who reside on the five mountains mahEnadra, himavAn, vindhyA, kailasa and the white peaked mandara and also those who reside on the mountains that are located at the end of the western sea and whose complexion is brilliant like the rising sun. Also summon those who take shelter in the abode of the Sun (perhaps mEru). And also those vAnaras of elephantine might who are dark like the black clouds and reside on the mount anjana. Send for those vAnaras who take shelter in the dhUmragiri and proceed by the mount mErU, These vAnaras who are very swift in their movement live in sylvan forests where fragrance permeates, in hermitages and other gardens enjoying intoxicating honey mixed drinks. Convince these fast-movers of the world either by dialogue or by showing them some benefit and ask them to be in my presence immediately.

प्रेषिताः प्रथमं ये च मयादूता महाजवाः।

त्वरणार्थं तु भूयस्त्वं हरीन् सम्प्रेषयापरान्।।4.37.10।।

This is in addition to those who have been sent for by my order earlier. Bring here all those vAnaras who are indulgent in carnal pleasures and are procrastinating. Those who do not report here within ten days deserve death on account of transgressing the royal order.

अहोभिर्दशभिर्ये च नागच्छन्ति ममाज्ञया।

हन्तव्यास्ते दुरात्मानो राजशासनदूषकाः।।4.37.12।।

The hundreds and thousands of swift vAnaras who are with me right now may all leave at once, cover the skies like the mountains and the clouds and by my order reach out the all the vAnaras all over the earth and bring them here at once”.

Taking note of the royal order, and the words of hanumAn, the mighty vAnaras took to the skies and left on the mission right away. Reaching out to the vAnaras who lived by the seas, mountains, rivers and other water bodies, the vAnara emissaries inspired them for the mission of rAma. The emissaries also conveyed the deathly warrant sent by sugrIva for summoning them. Being mortally scared of sugrIva, three crore dark complexioned vAnaras from the anjana mountains left for the hilly abode where rAma stayed. From the mountain where the sun sets, ten crore vAnaras shining in the complexion of the sun, left for rAma’s mission. From the peaks of the kailasa range, a thousand crore vAnaras with lion-like gait and glory left for the place where rAghava was.

vAnaras who subsisted on roots and fruits and took shelter in the mountain range of the himAlayas, a thousand crore such set out. A similar contingent of dark complexioned vAnaras from the vindhyas left at once for the mission. And so did innumerable mighty vAnaras who lived by the seas, other forests, caves, rivers and other water bodies.

The vAnara army from all sides converged near kishkindhA leaping through the skies as if they were drinking off the sun! In the meanwhile, those vAnaras who had gone with the warrants, beheld a mighty tree near the mount himavAn where a mAhESwara yajna was conducted to propitiate all the gods. There the vAnaras beheld with wonder fruits and roots emerged out of the yajna which tasted nectarine. Whoever partook those divine fruits and roots remained satiated for a month!

तदन्नसम्भवं दिव्यं फलमूलं मनोहरम्।

यः कश्चित्सकृदश्नाति मासं भवति तर्पितः।।4.37.30।।

The vAnaras collected those glorious herbal roots and fruits from there as also from the altar they took fragrant flowers in order to present those to sugrIva and delight him. Then speeding up, the vAnaras in hordes led the other swift moving vAnaras to kishkindhA where sugrIva was present. Then they reported to sugrIva that his order has been conveyed to the vAnaras all over the earth and in compliance with the same the vAnaras have already hastened from there and shall be reporting to him soon. Then they submitted the glorious presents they had secured for him. The lord of the vAnaras was delighted to hear this and gladly received the presents that they had brought.

Here we conclude the thirty seventh sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!

jAi SrIrAma.
