4.35. tArA to the rescue, again

Hari Om.

Let us begin the thirty fifth sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam by offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

Led into the inner chambers by tArA, an angry lakshmaNa and a luxuriating sugrIva come face to face. On one hand, the indifference of sugrIva to the agreed mission and on the other, his sensuous pursuits make lakshmaNa fly into a rage. He comes down heavily on sugrIva, quoting from the scriptures he says there really is no expiation for the sin of ingratitude while all other sins may have some way of redemption from. He defines to him the self restraint that is the hall mark of the kings. And in that downpour of wrath, he threatens sugrIva with dire consequences for breaking the gentlemen’s agreement and tells him that the way through which vAlI exited is still open and if he doesn’t comply he will sent through the same way! Onwards…

tAra of moonlike charm addressed lakshmaNa who was fiery in his disposition and said –

lakshmaNa with sugrIva. Pic from here.

“O lakshmaNa, you ought not speak so harshly and the king of vAnaras doesn’t deserve to hear this, especially from you.

sugrIva is not at all ungrateful, nor is he a cheat, nor is he a liar and neither is he crooked. O warrior, the favour bestowed on him by rAma, impossible for anyone else, has not been forgotten by sugrIva. By the grace of rAma, sugrIva secured fame, kingdom, rumA and me. He has lost much sleep in the past and now that he has got this opportunity to enjoy, he is a little lost on sense of time. O lakshmaNa, just like sage viSwAmitra, who was infatuated by ghRtAchI (mEnaka) and spent ten years in her company and felt it was just one day, sugrIva too is smitten.

If a great and accomplished sage like viSwAmitra undr the influence of the pleasures lost the sense of time, what then to speak of common people? Having submitted to the demands of his body, the vAnara is tired and yet not satisfied in his sensuous pursuits and you ought to forgive him for that.

O dear lakshmaNa, it doesn’t befit you to fly into a rage like ordinary people without ascertaining the intentions of sugrIva. Men endowed with great conduct like yourself, O lakshmaNa should not be swayed by anger without knowing the facts. O knower of dharma, I beseech you on behalf of sugrIva, kindly discard this anger and rashness. I am sure he will unite sItA with rAma like the moon uniting with rOhiNI after slaying rAvaNa. I believe that for the sake of rAma’s welfare, sugrIva will give up his kingdom, wealth, rumA and me.

lanka is teeming with hundreds of thousands of crores of demons. Without slaying them it is impossible to slay the abductor of maithilI. Without the help of other vAnara warriors, sugrIva alone cannot accomplish this task of slaying the wicked rAvaNa. vAlI, who was in the know of things about lanka had given this account. I am unaware of his source but am speaking from what I have heard from him.

O saumitri, in order to help in your mission, sugrIva has already sent the order to summon the mighty vAnaras from all over. In fact he is waiting on them right now. Since they have not arrived yet, he has not yet gone on the mission in quest of sItA. O lakshmaNa, very soon, hundreds of crores of bears and crores of fiery vAnaras shall descend near you upon sugrIva’s order to help in the mission. Therefore, O lakshmaNa, please discard this anger of yours.

Beholding this angry face of yours glowing with blood shot eyes, the women of the foremost vAnaras are not finding peace, being afraid of the danger that they had experienced (vAli’s death).

Here we conclude the thirty fifth sarga of the kishkindhA kAnDam of SrImath vAlmiKi rAmAyaNam and humbly offer it at the lotus feet of SrIrAma. Hari: Om!

jAi SrIrAma.
