Hari Om.
Let us begin the fifty second sarga of the bAlakAnDam with offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.
SatAnanda began the narration of the saga of sage viSwAmitra. King kauSika in his trip around the earth reached the hermitage of sage vaSisTha. Onwards…
King kauSika was overjoyed to see the tremendously austere vaSisTha of immense penance and prostrated in front of him. The great sage vaSisTha warmly received the king, seated him appropriately and offered hospitality. Having received the hospitality from the sage, the king inquired about the welfare of the hermitage, the inhabitants, paraphernalia due for yajna etc, to which vaSisTha answered in the affirmative. The sage then returned the favor and inquired of the king – O righteous and valorous king, I hope all is well with you and you are ruling over the subjects in conformity with the moral law. Hope your subjects are happy and so are your sons and grandsons. Hope your servants are obedient and are well treated. Hope you have conquered your enemies. How is the morale of your army and hope your treasury is in good shape. The king kauSika submitted humbly that all was well.
After these mutual inquiries both the righteous personalities dwelt at length on matters of mutual interest and were pleased. At the end of the friendly chat, the sage vaSisTha smiled and offered appropriate hospitality to king kauSika and his entire army. He requested the king to accept the same as he was a royal guest and deserved to be treated with due honour. At this request, the king replied courteously that he was well taken care as per traditions, with the available resources of the hermitage and even more than that he could have audience with the great sage and all this has pleased him no end. He requested the sage to be disposed towards him in a friendly manner always. vaSisTha however insisted that the king needs to be treated more appropriately and after a while king kauSika yielded to the request of the sage.
vaSisTha was pleased. He summoned his wish-fulfilling cow Sabala and commanded that he has decided to offer hospitality to the royal saint (rajarshi) and his army and that she should immediately arrange for the same. Please make items of the six taste and four kinds as desired by each one of the guests quickly for my sake. Thus the great sage charged Sabala with the duty of preparation of the food for the guests.
