Hari Om.

Let us begin the fortyseventh sarga of the bAlakAnDam with offering our prostrations at the lotus feet of SrIrAma and our sathguru.

In this sarga, viSwAmitra connects the story of indra and diti described in the last two sargas to the city they’re about to visit – viSAla. read on…

The seven fold division of her fetus distressed diti. However she absolved the mighty indra of any fault and recognized that it was her own mistake that led to the seven-fold division of her fetus.

indra with the maruts

She prayerfully continued, “O indra, let these seven celestial sons of mine become the seven guardian deities of the marut regions (wind). Let them be well known as maruts or wind gods spread over the universe. One of them will dwell in the brahmalOka, while the other in the indralOka. The third of them will float around in the skies and be known as vAyu. Let the four others be the guardians of the four directions. May you bless them to be so”. With folded hands, indra assured diti that her seven celestial children will wander around the universe as guardian wind deities. With this agreement, both of them ascended to the heavens happily having accomplished their objectives.

O rAma, this is the very place where diti performed intense and fruitful vows and indra attended on her. In the clan of the ikshvAkus, a glorious son was born in alambusha whose name was viSAla and his claim to fame was the construction of the city of viSAla. Mighty hEmachandra was the son of viSAla. The famous suchandra was born of hEmachandra. Well known dhUmrASwa was born to suchandra. dhUmrASwa’s son was sanjaya whose son was the valorous sahadEva. The just and righteous kuSASwa was the son of sahadEva. The splendorous and valorous sOmadatta was the son of kuSASwa. The famous kakutstha is the son of sOmadatta. The invincible and godly sumati who is currently ruling over viSAla is the son of kakutstha. He is full of valour and is righteous. By the grace of the ikshvAku all the kings of viSAla are not only long lived but also valorous, righteous and religious. O rAma, we shall rest in the city of viSAla tonight and proceed to mithila tomorrow to see king janaka.

Having learnt of the arrival of sage viSwAmitra, the great king of viSAla, sumati came forward and received him with full honour due to a sage of viSwAmitra’s calibre. He prostrated in front of him and expressed his happiness at the great good fortune of hosting the celebrated sage and said, “I believe there is none more fortunate than me!”
